Above the Sea of Fog: Escaping the Grey Autumn on the Churfirsten

There are those weeks in late autumn when the Swiss lowlands sit under a grey lid for days. The fog simply refuses to lift, the light stays flat, and moods sink with it. That is exactly when it pays to look up, because a sea of fog always has an upper edge. If you want to hike above the clouds in Switzerland, Toggenburg is the place to be: in autumn the Churfirsten and the Chäserrugg often rise clear out of the sea of fog, and while everyone below is shivering, you sit in the sun up top. Escaping the fog in Switzerland is not a dream here. On many days it is simply a question of altitude.

Why the sun shines above Toggenburg

The magic word is inversion. In late autumn a layer of high fog frequently settles over the lowlands and Lake Constance. The cold, damp air stays down low, while above it the air is clear and mild. This upside-down weather pattern is why it can be grey and cool in Zurich or by the lake, while higher up the sun is shining.

On many of these days the Churfirsten and the Chäserrugg, at 2262 metres, sit comfortably above the fog line. What waits for you up there is the perfect autumn picture: a white, endless sea of fog below you, a deep blue sky above, and the warm autumn sun on your face.

To be honest, not every day is an inversion day. Sometimes the top of the fog sits higher, sometimes the lid dissolves entirely, and sometimes it stays dull even up high. That is why it is worth checking the fog forecast before each trip. But when the inversion does arrive, the Churfirsten cloud sea is one of the most beautiful natural sights our autumn has to offer.

The best viewpoints

The classic is the summit of the Chäserrugg with its all-round panorama. From here the view stretches across the whole Churfirsten ridge, down to Lake Walen, and out over the sea of fog to the distant Alpine peaks. A little more relaxed and especially family-friendly is Alp Sellamatt. On many autumn days this sunny terrace also lies above the fog and makes a lovely spot for an easy day with children. For shorter outings, Iltios is a good choice, letting you gain height quickly and rise out of the grey.

And if the cable car happens not to be running, lower hikes can be rewarding too, as soon as you cross the fog line on foot. Sometimes a few hundred metres of climbing is enough, and suddenly you are standing in the sun. For more ideas for the season, see our overview of autumn in Toggenburg.

Timing and cable cars in late autumn

If you want to use the cable car, keep an eye on the timetable. In 2026 the Iltios and Chäserrugg cable cars run daily until 25 October. After that, weather-dependent service applies from 26 October to 1 November, meaning the cars run according to conditions.

In November the cable car often rests entirely. That is no reason to stay home, though. It is precisely then that climbing above the fog line on foot becomes something special: you start in the grey, work your way up step by step, and at some point the fog tears open and the sun greets you. Alternatively, lower sunny spots that sit above the fog lid do the trick just as well.

Our most important tip: check the fog and sun forecast the evening before. That way you already know at breakfast how high you need to climb to reach the sun, and you can choose your destination calmly.

Evenings back in the warm

As wonderful as a day above the clouds is, in late autumn the evening turns cool quickly. All the nicer, then, to come back into the warm. At our place your own whirlpool is waiting for you, steaming, while outside the November fog lies over the village.

Plan your sea-of-fog weekend

The easiest way is to make it a weekend: arrive on Friday evening, head up above the clouds on Saturday, and take an easy trip back on Sunday. Alt St. Johann lies around an hour from Zurich, so you are out of the fog and into the mountains in no time.

A trip like this suits couples and small groups just as well as larger parties, since the whole house has room for up to eleven guests.
